Hotel Review: Mariott Momi Bay Fiji

The Marriott Momi Bay Fiji is located in Momi Bay around 1 hour drive south from Nadi international airport. Offering a range of accomodation from deluxe lagoon view rooms to beachfront Bure's and overwater Bure's, all rooms feature lagoon views. We decided to stay here during our Fiji Weekend Getaway, you can read more about that trip here. We had previously stayed in an overwater bungalow at The Intercontinental Tahiti so we were keen to stay at the Marriott to see what their overwater Bure's were like.
The Room
We were excited to see our overwater Bure and see what it was like compared to the overwater bungalow we had stayed in at The Intercontinental Tahiti, its certainly impressive as you head along the adults only boardwalk to the front door. The Bure's are spacious with an open plan design including the bathroom however there are hidden sliding doors for privacy throughout the room. There is a large spacious deck with a daybed and dining table for two and it has its own stairs down to the water for swimming. The bathroom is part of the bedroom with a central freestanding tub, large shower enclosure and a smaller toilet enclosure. We loved the deck and its day bed and the overhang of the roof means there is a good mix of sun and shade as well as shelter from the rain. We didn't get time to swim off the deck due to other commitments on our trip but we did enjoy the deck for pre dinner drinks on both nights of our stay and for early morning sunrise coffee. The room has an empty mini bar which you can request to be stocked with whatever you like as well as an espresso machine.
Customer Service
We found the customer service a bit hit and miss, the reception, concierge, bar and day spa staff were all excellent providing friendly professional service however the service and food in the restaurants was poor where we sometimes had to wait nearly an hour to have our orders taken and then another long wait for our drink and food orders to arrive only to be disappointed with the quality of the food. This really let the hotel down and they should look at their procedures in the restaurants to try and improve their customer service and food.
Restaurants & Bars
We ate at all of the hotels restaurants during our stay, Fish Bar and Lagoon House for dinner and Goji Kitchen buffet for breakfast and unfortunately the buffet offered the best food and even then that varied from day to day. On our first night we visited The Fish Bar the hotels seafood restaurant and the seafood that we had was excellent however it seems the chef was not aware of how to cook a steak to medium well with the steaks being served rare instead. On our second night we ate at the Lagoon House which is the hotels mediterranean restaurant where the croquettes were tasteless and the seafood paella seemed like a frozen dinner that had been microwaved which was a shame being how much fresh seafood there is in Fiji. We ate breakfast at Goji Kitchen both mornings which is the hotels buffet, the first morning we had bacon, eggs, sausages and tomato and the only thing that was warm on the buffet line was the sausages. The second morning we decided to try the local breakfast specialties and the asian breakfast both of which were excellent and hot, we would have been more than happy had all our other meals been like it was that morning.
Day Spa
The hotels day spa is the Quan Day Spa and we booked in here for the Quan Signature Massage a treatment combining a relaxation massage with a hot herbal heat packs, the spa's facilities were excellent as was our massage and definitely a highlight of our stay.
Resort Facilities
The resort has several swimming pools, the adults only sunset pool at the Fish Bar plus a main pool with swim up bar and a kids pool which are both located at Lagoon House. You can also swim in the hotels lagoon which the hotel surrounds. There is a water sports hut near the day spa and here you can go on a jet ski safari, go kayaking or go boating. There is also outdoor tennis courts, beach volleyball and sun lounges with umbrellas around the pools and on the lagoon beaches
Summary
As mentioned this resort has amazing facilities and exceptional staff however the service and food in the restaurants could be better, if it was a cheap place to stay we could handle the poor restaurant service and food but when they're charging top dollar we did expect better. Also due to the resorts isolated location its not like you can go down the road to eat at a nearby restaurant as there is nothing nearby. Whilst the overwater Bure's are beautiful and marketed as adults only it would seem the focus of the hotel is the family market who stay in the non overwater roomsand bure's. The families seemed happy with the resort and I would guess they probably were enjoying better food in the buffet or pizza most nights. The hotel needs to improve in some areas but generally is a good resort and suits the family friendly market. If your like us and not travelling as a family you would probably be prefer staying somewhere else as the resort is primarily after the family market.
