Coconuts Beach Club Resort & Spa is located in Maninoa around 1 hour drive south from Apia international airport on the Samoan island of Upolo. Offering a range of accomodation from villas and suites to beachfront fale's and overwater fale's, the vast majority of rooms feature views over the lagoon. We decided to stay here during our Samoa Weekend Getaway, you can read more about that trip here.

Coconuts Beach Club Resort & Spa

The Room

We were excited to see our overwater fale and see what it was like compared to the other island bungalow style accomodation we had stayed in. The Fale's are spacious with an open plan design and a large bathroom with spectacular water views. There is a large spacious deck with two sunlounges a table with two chairs and a lounge. We loved the deck and its view over lagoon and beach, its verandah roof means there is a good mix of sun and shade as well as shelter from the rain. We enjoyed relaxing on the deck during the day and watching the amazing sunset at night. There is a stocked minibar with complimentary beer, soft drink and a carafe of white wine as well as basic tea and coffee facilities in the room. It's worth noting that there is no television which didn't bother us but it might bother some guests, there is no telephone with which to contact reception so you have to walk to reception if you need to speak to them. There are no ironing facilities in the room, they do however offer laundry services for a fee so if you don't want to pay the fee try to pack you bags so your clothes don't crease. Packing a small umbrella should also be a consideration as one is not provided in the room and you cant get anywhere from your room without going outside as we found out when we needed to get to reception during a passing downpour.

Customer Service

We found the customer service excellent, from the reception, bar and day spa staff through to the restaurant staff who all provided warm and friendly service. We could not fault the service at Coconuts Beach Club Resort & Spa.

Restaurants & Bars

The resort has one restaurant which is Mika's Restaurant which is open for a la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner, it's worth noting that the hotel does not offer room service so it seems a bit odd that the rooms have dining tables on the deck. We ate at Mika's Restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner during our stay and we can say the food was generally good, our favourites were the fresh caught Sashimi & Coconut Fish with Pineapple Sauce. We did have some issues on both nights we were there, the first night our mains arrived before our starter so they were taken back to the kitchen, they were then brought back after our starters cold which was a disappointing. The second night we both ordered steaks medium well and both came medium rare with cold vegetables so it would seem there is definitely room for improvement in the kitchen at Mika's, we didn't have any issues during breakfast or lunch where the food served was excellent on both days. On Saturday nights they have Samoan dancers and fire twirlers perform during dinner on all other nights they have a string band performing during dinner. If you have purchased the coconuts meal deal which is $89.00 US per day you get breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as unlimited house wine, beer and soft drinks at lunch and dinner included. There are 2 bars at the resort, Sienis 3 Stool Bar next to Mika's restaurant and a swim up bar in the gecko shaped swimming pool. We had cocktails and local beer at Sienis 3 Stool Bar during our stay and the cocktails and service were great. It's worth noting if your a wine drinker your only options are a carafe of house white or red, there are no bottled options nor any champagne options so if you like your wine you may want to pack some in your bag at airport duty free.

Day Spa

The resorts Day Spa is located near reception and was only recently built, we booked the 1hr Island Time Massage which we were disappointed in, the massage technique was very aggressive and not relaxing at all but you can't expect highly trained therapists in such remote locations, the spa's facilities were excellent however and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

Resort Facilities

The resort has a gecko shaped swimming pool with swim up bar located on the beachfront surrounded by fale's with sun lounges and a water sports hut where you can borrow complimentary snorkel gear as well as kayaks and you can also book kayak, snorkelling and surfing safaris at the waterspouts hut. There is an onsite shop selling locally made products, a guest lounge where you can read and borrow books plus on Mondays and Wednesdays it doubles as a cinema complete with bar service. Reception can book private tours to anywhere you want to go on the island during the day and each evening there is happy hour at the pool bar. On Fridays the Disco Duck, an overwater dance floor with glass backlit flooring is open for you to dance the night away and on Saturdays it is culture day with cultural experiences throughout the day finishing with a Fiafia (Samoan dancers and fire twirlers) during dinner which includes a Siva ceremony.

Gecko Shaped Pool

Summary

As mentioned this resort has great facilities and exceptional warm and friendly staff and we could not fault the service however the food could do with some improvement. The resorts location couldn't be better sitting on the southern side of Upolo island with beautiful untouched beaches, reef and clear water lagoon. The overwater Fale's are the best we have stayed in with incredible overwater views from the bathroom and a larger spacious deck. The resort is perfect for both couples and families and the layout of the resort means everything is a short walk away. We wished we had stayed longer but we will definitely be looking to come back to Coconuts next time were in Samoa.
